Phauang Malai is a flower garland given as a sign of welcome, respect, good intentions and love. In the reign of Rama V Chulalongkorn (15th century), fresh flower garlands were used in the royal court ceremony, and later in the Rattanakosin era. Thai flower garland was made into an object on special occasions during a reign year. The garland is made by pinning together different combinations of flowers, depending on the seasonal bloom and the artist's imagination. The mixture usually contains many different fragrant flowers.
